Deadly Attacks in Southern Israel

August 24, 2011

More than 140 rockets and mortars have been fired at Israel since last Thursday.  However, now there appears to be a cease fire.   Please continue to pray for those affected throughout the epicenter region.

I would ask for pastors and Christian families and individuals all over the world to pray for peace…for comfort for the victims and their families…and for wisdom for the Prime Minister and his senior advisors on how best to respond. Please also pray for Israelis and Palestinians at this time to turn their hearts back to the Lord, to seek comfort and wisdom from the truths of the Bible. Pray, too, that those who love the Lord Jesus to know how best to love and serve their neighbors and enemies and that the Lord would use these events to accomplish His purposes.

As Joseph said to his brothers, “Do not be afraid…As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.” (Genesis 50:19-20)

Things are really heating up in southern Israel. 22 rockets have been fired from Gaza against innocent civilians in towns and cities along the southern border, and the Israeli Air Force is retaliating.

Please keep praying for peace, protection, healing for the injured, and comfort for the families and friends of the murdered.

There are reports unfolding of an organized terror attack against innocent civilians in Southern Israel. At least 7 people have been killed in a series of attacks on vehicles near Eilat in the south of Israel, according to Israeli medics.

Gunmen fired at an Israeli bus that was traveling near the Egyptian border going from Beer Sheva to Eilat in the far south. Reports said two other vehicles were hit - one by a rocket and one by an explosive device - and that there was a continuing firefight. Israeli officials have said the gunmen came from the Gaza Strip and had entered Israel through Egypt's Sinai desert.

It is the first major attack on Israel's border with Egypt for several years, the BBC's Paul Danahar reports. “The first attack, at around 12 P.M., was a drive-by shooting targeting Egged Bus 392 traveling from Be’er Sheva to Eilat, near the Netafim junction. Shortly afterward, IDF forces rushed to the scene and were faced with several explosive devices that were detonated alongside an IDF vehicle. At approximately 12:35, a mortar was fired from Egypt to Israel. No casualties were reported. At 1:10 P.M., a terrorist cell fired an anti-tank missile at a private vehicle, wounding seven. Minutes later, another cell fired an anti-tank missile at a private vehicle, killing six. The IDF Spokesman reported that two to four terrorists were killed during the clashes….” The Israeli military has most recently confirmed carrying out airstrikes over the Gaza Strip following the deadly series of attacks in southern Israel.

As The Joshua Fund, it is our prayer that God will show His mercy and grace to the families that have been devastated by this series of attacks. Please join us as we pray for the wounded and the emotionally traumatized. Would you seek the Lord for His comfort and personal ministry to the families of those who have had loved ones terribly wounded or tragically killed?

As followers of Jesus, and those who are called like Abraham - “for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God”, we continue to pray above all for the Peace of God to rule and reign in the land of Israel and her surrounding neighbors. Please pray fervently with us for all of the people groups involved and ask for God to reveal Himself to individuals even through such tragic circumstances.
